Uber-cool contemporary house extension

We were asked to create a stunning contemporary extension for a lovely retired couple in Jordanhill in Glasgow's West End.

The Challenge

Our clients approached nest to design and build a super cool, contemporary extension in Glasgow's West End. They had spoken with several other companies and immediately knew we were the one company who could both design and build to the high standard they wanted. 

The Solution

Working closely with Cameron Webster Architects, the design involved removing a large part of the existing sandstone building. In fact we removed the corner of the building and used specialist supports to prop the building during the process. We even had to install a new foundation just to support the props! 

Once the corner of the building was removed we installed large steel beams and columns to support the new structure and existing building. This would allow us to then form the external walls and roof and create a vast, open plan, living, dining and kitchen area.

The Results

Complete with clerestory glazing, sliding aluminium doors and wood burning stove, the space is flooded with light, remaining cosy at the same time. A custom made kitchen, underfloor heating, skylight and utility room complete the project and create a unique, contemporary space where our clients now spend most of their time.

Pam and Tony are over the moon with their new extension, it is so unique and unlike any other extension in Jordanhill – or indeed Glasgow. It both compliments the existing building and juxtaposes contemporary architecture with the older sandstone building.

Having recently retired we wanted to extend our kitchen into a family space for friends and grandchildren.

After looking at various possibilities, we were intrigued with the nest website which showed very contemporary extensions onto older properties in Glasgow’s West End.

After preliminary meetings discussing ideas and design proposals, we embarked on a partnership with them on a journey which took us through architect’s design, planning and build.

All these services were done inhouse with demolition experts, builders, joiners, plumbers, electricians seamlessly becoming involved as the job progressed.

Special praise must go to the directors Dene and Debbie Happell for having the vision, confidence, but above all the competence to see the project through.

All the men worked diligently – the head joiner Gavin merits particular praise for his attention to detail and the high quality of his work.

nest have commissioned and built a breathtaking contemporary extension which blends harmoniously with an Edwardian sandstone building. The result is simply stunning.
