Coorie
Architecturally significant contemporary luxury lodge in the heart of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in central Scotland.
The Challenge
Dene and Debbie saw the potential to build a house for holiday rental where an old shed sat. It's is a unique spot right on the shores of Loch Venachar with spectacular views of the loch and the mountains.
However the couple didn't just want any holiday home, they imagined something contemporary, architecturally significant and unique to the Trossachs and to Scotland.
They partnered with their pals at Cameron Webster Architects to design something special.
The Solution
The form of Coorie is in part driven by the width of the site and the location of the surrounding trees. The ground floor makes itself as small as possible and broadly follows the lines of the width of the site, the first floor then twists and contorts to frame the views and provide covered outdoor space. The living spaces are located on the first floor to maximise the views to the water and the landscape beyond whilst at the same time taking advantage of the roof form and lifting the users into the tree canopy.
Black timber sarking boards clad the building and add a natural, honest feel to the building. The roof is constructed with aluminium profiled sheets. which is visually striking, and in keeping with many of the agricultural buildings in the area.
The Results
The sculptural form of strong lines and geometric volumes is visually striking but equally at home in its landscape and surroundings. The house has been arranged in an upside-down way to enjoy and immerse in the panoramic views.
An open-plan luxury living, dining and kitchen area with a covered balcony and built-in window seat nook sit at the heart of this space. A warm yet dramatic, dark staircase leads down to the bedrooms, setting the mood for a cosier, more private atmosphere.
The interior decor mixes mid-century modern designs and utilitarian touches, such as industrial lighting with classic designs including Hans Wegner’s ‘Wishbone’ chairs, an Ercol dining table and Timorous Beasties and Harris Tweed fabrics.
With air-source heat pump, a wood-fired hot tub, high-tech insulation, eco toiletries and a proposed car charing point, this an is a highly sustainable house.
Named Coorie, which can mean ‘nestle’, this holiday home successfully blends luxury, adventure and natural beauty.
